Shimmer: Visual Rhythms

Carl works with acrylic paint, holographic papers, glass beads, and pieces of costume jewelry, which are attached to wood panels and coated with high-gloss poly-resin, to create colorful images filled with geometric patterns. African masks, fish and birds are all created in this visually arresting format. His “paintings are a respectful nod to centuries of influential African design and tradition”. In his work Carl seeks to honor this heritage by bringing it into a contemporary context.

Carl Lopes graduated from Pratt University in 1977 with an MFA, and has had an active studio practice ever since. He held the position of Visual Arts Director at Barnstable High School for 25 years, and worked there as a visual arts instructor since 1977, retiring in 2014 to devote himself full time to his artistic career. Carl Is an active member of the arts community here on Cape Cod, and serves on the Board of Directors for Cotuit Center for the Arts, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and the Zion Union Heritage Museum, where he is also a resident artist.

Woodruff’s Art Center is a fine art gallery, custom frame shop and retailer of high quality artist materials, located in Mashpee Commons. The business has been serving clients on the Cape and Islands since 1989.
