Piano Parley: A Performance and Discussion of Civil War Music

“CIVIL WAR” PIANIST TO PLAY AND DISCUSS MUSIC POPULAR DURING THE CIVIL WAR ERA

Jacqueline Schwab, pianist on Ken Burns’ “Civil War” series, will present “Piano Parley: a Performance and Discussion of Civil War Music in Parlors, Ballrooms, Churches, and Meeting Houses.”  This event is in conjunction with the Falmouth Chorale’s “Glory, Hallelujah” concerts, in which Ms. Schwab is the featured artist. This public event will take place on Saturday, May 2, 12:00 to 1:30 PM, at Cape Conservatory’s Falmouth Campus, 60 Highfield Drive.  A $5.00 donation is requested. 

For this Civil War piano parley, Jacqueline will perform her arrangements of Stephen Foster, Civil War tunes from North and South, Victorian ballroom dance tunes, Scots and Irish songs and dance tunes brought over by settlers, and hymns and spirituals that infused American hearts during the Civil War era.  She will talk about the music and why it is still with us in today’s culture.

Pianist Jacqueline Schwab creates spirited and meditative arrangements on vintage “heart songs” and traditional dance tunes from America, England, Scotland and beyond—spinning out stories, in her variations on the themes.  Her playing has been heard on Ken Burns’ “Civil War” and a dozen other of his series, as well as other period documentaries.  In Burns’ words, “Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and … unusually moving.”  

She performed for President Clinton at the White House and, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman.  She performs her solo arrangements at concerts and festivals throughout the US.  Jacqueline’s music springs from classical, traditional dance and song, and jazz roots.  She received a Bachelor of Music with honors from the New England Conservatory where she majored in improvisation, and has long studied and taught at traditional music and dance workshops throughout the US and beyond.

The public is invited to attend this event which precedes and illuminates the Falmouth Chorale’s performances of “Glory, Hallelujah!” a concert commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War.  The concert will be presented at 4:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday, May 2 & 3, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church at 270 Gifford Road in Falmouth.  Ms. Schwab is a featured performer.  More information is available at 774-392-2383 or falmouthchoralemanager@gmail.com.
