The Woods Hole Film Festival Dinner & a Movie series continues on Saturday, March 11th with the award-winning feature documentary film THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS: YO-YO MA & THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE. The series, which takes place monthly through May, screens films at WHOI’s Redfield Auditorium, located at 57 Water Street, Woods Hole. On the night of each screening, ticket purchasers may present their tickets for discounts and special offers at participating restaurants, including the Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street, Quick’s Hole Tavern, 29 Railroad Ave. and Water Street Kitchen, 56 Water Street, Woods Hole. The selections include films from the 25^th Woods Hole Film Festival, as well as independent films curated specifically for the series. The series is part of an ongoing effort by the Woods Hole Film Festival to offer year round independent film programming to supplement the annual summer Festival. The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, the latest film from the creators of the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom and the critically-hailed Best of Enemies, follows members of the Ensemble as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution.

Blending performance footage, personal interviews, and archival film, director Morgan Neville and producer Caitrin Rogers focus on the personal journeys of a small group of Silk Road Ensemble mainstays — Kinan Azmeh(Syria), Kayhan Kalhor (Iran), Yo-Yo Ma (France/United States), Wu Man(China), and Cristina Pato (Spain) — to chronicle passion, talent, and sacrifice. Through these moving individual stories, the filmmakers paint a vivid portrait of a bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind. About The Silk Road Ensemble

YO-YO MA is a cellist whose many-faceted career is a testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences, and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber-music activities. Inspired by the exchange of ideas and traditions along the historical Silk Road, Yo-Yo Ma established the Silk Road Project (Silkroad) in 1998 to explore how the arts can advance global understanding. Since 2000, the musicians of the Silk Road Ensemble have led Silkroad’s work to connect the world through the arts, focusing in three areas: musical performances, learning programs, and cultural entrepreneurship. Representing dozens of nationalities and musical traditions, the musicians of the Ensemble model new forms of cultural exchange through performances, workshops, and residencies.
