Pawtuxet-born Tisquantim, also known as Squanto, was fluent in English and lived among the Wampanoag. Plymouth Colony Gov. William Bradford made him his Indian emissary.

Tisquantim was born into the Pawtuxet people who occupied lands in present-day Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Little is known about his early life, for he was seized with other Indigenous People and taken to the Mediterranean port of Málaga, Spain, to be sold into slavery. According to Britannica, Squanto escaped to England and joined the Newfoundland Company.
