Inspired by her childhood years in Pittsburgh, Jacqueline will perform music from Western and Eastern Europe and South America, along with spirituals and ragtime. She will speak about the pieces and muse on the contributions of immigrant music.
The event will include two sets, intermission in between each set, and a Q & A with Jacqueline after the program.
At a time when the United States has been engaging in difficult discussions about immigration and cultural diversity, I Lift My Lampcelebrates vintage songs and dance tunes from American immigrants. Jacqueline will speak about her connection to the pieces and their history and encourage audience members to muse on their own cultural heritage and that of others.
Jacqueline spins musical stories out of the myriad strands in the American quilt and with the spirit of community music making at their heart. Her signature playing features in over a dozen of Ken Burns’ documentaries, including his Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War and Benjamin Franklin, as well as The Irish in America—The Long Journey Home and other PBS documentaries. She is well known to the traditional dance world for her groundbreaking playing with the Bare Necessities ensemble. She has recorded five solo albums, including her recently-released I Lift My Lamp—Illuminations from Immigrant America. Jacqueline graduated from New England Conservatory, majoring in piano improvisation. Since her early years in Pittsburgh, PA, she has lived in Boston, as well as on Cape Cod.
