Native Plant Marker Unveiling & Garden Celebration

Native Plant Markers to be unveiled at CCMoA Sculpture Garden

The Cape Cod Museum of Art will be having a Garden Celebration as they unveil twelve indigenous plant markers in a special ceremony at the Yasuna Denny Sculpture Garden on the Museum grounds on Thursday, June 3 at 4pm. The event is free, but pre-registration is requested.

The markers, handcrafted by artist Kim Rumberger of Hyannis, include 3-dimensional bronze leaves and other representative vegetation from the native plants they mark, alongside the plant’s common and scientific names.  The Bronze leaves are made from bronze metal clay, a medium composed of recycled powdered copper and tin in an organic plant-based binder. Each piece is sculpted and dried, and is fired in a kiln. After the binder burns off, solid bronze pieces remain.

The plant marker project was funded through a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, awarded in 2019. The installation was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Special guests at the celebration will include AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake, Horticulturalist Roberta Clark, CCMOA Director of Art Benton Jones, and CCMoA Trustees.

In conjunction with the unveiling, CCMoA will introduce a new line of jewelry made by Kim Rumberger, based on the plants represented on the markers, which will be available for sale in the Museum Shop. Proceeds from sales will benefit the Museum.

About The Artist
Kim is a local jewelry artist and has been a CCMoA instructor since 2014, where her original metal clay teaching experiences began. Her classes reach throughout the Cape and on-line across the country.  She has received numerous international top awards for her work in metal clay.  Her “Kick the Corona” hinged locket is featured in the Alliance for Metal Clay Artists Worldwide (AMCAW) 2021 Exceptional Works in Metal Clay Calendar. She will also be an elite presenter at the 2022 inaugural SINTER international metal clay conference in Pittsburg, PA. She was recently named to the CCMoA Board of Trustees and serves as Clerk of the Board.

CCMoA’s Yasuna Denny Sculpture Garden is a tranquil outdoor gallery – a place to stroll and reflect on the fifteen sculptures set amid local flora and fauna from the adjacent tree-lined walkway. On this 40th anniversary of the museum with the many COVID restrictions in place, the CCMoA gardens have taken on a new role.  Visitors can stroll and distance themselves and still view impressive pieces of art and learn about beautiful plants native to Cape Cod while they await opportunities to be admitted to the indoor galleries.
