Lecture: Winslow Lewis and the US Lighthouse Establishment

Learn about the building and management of lighthouses in the 1800s.

In the early 19th century, Wellfleet native Winslow Lewis wielded significant power in the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment. Neither an engineer nor scientist, Lewis was rather a contractor whose designs prioritized budget over function—with sometimes disastrous results. Join Curator Emily Sullivan to hear how the issues within the Lighthouse Establishment led to the U.S. Lighthouse Board, and the professionalization of the nation’s lighthouse service. This free Zoom lecture is online only.
