The artist Georgia O’Keefe believed that “music could be translated into something for the eye.” Her lushly bold work of the same name is the inspiration for Samuel Hazo’s Blue and Green, one of several on the program to connect the visual and the musical. In the ethereal The Red Balloon, listeners will hear the titular balloon, drifting up and away, right out of the painting that prompted Anne McGinty to write the piece. And Palette, a petite suite by Randall Standridge, depicts a series of colors with distinct personalities: Electric Yellow, Harvest Orange, Angry Red, Royal Purple, Midnight Blue and Verdant Green.
Nature’s colors are on brilliant display in the soaring Purple Martin by Yukiko Nishimura, and the folk-inspired motifs of James Swearington’s Blue Ridge Saga transport listeners to a special place. Rounding out the multi-hued afternoon are a few more familiar tunes, including the pop anthem of acceptance, True Colors, and another brand-new Tom Borning arrangement, this one of the Elton John classic hit, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
The Cape Cod Concert Band, an all-volunteer 45-piece wind and percussion ensemble, is conducted by Tom Borning. Also the director of the Falmouth Town Band, Mr. Borning plays trumpet across New England, and is the host and creator of The Everything Music Ed Podcast. The CCCB is funded by audience donations, business supporters, and grants from the Mass Cultural Council, the Elizabeth B. McGraw Foundation, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent.
