Branch Out Book Club: August - Show Me a Sign

Titcomb’s Bookshop’s in-person book club – Branch Out Book Club – will be meeting on August 28th at 6:30pm at Titcomb’s Bookshop. For the month of August, we will be discussing the middle grade novel, Show Me a Sign. Deaf author Ann Clare LeZotte weaves a riveting story inspired by the true history of a thriving deaf community on Martha’s Vineyard in the early 19th century. This piercing exploration of ableism, racism, and colonialism will inspire readers to examine core beliefs and question what is considered normal.

Titcomb’s Bookseller Meghan Bousquet says: “The urgency of the story and the narrator’s fervent drive, learning to follow her heart and her ethics, captivated me from start to finish. This is such a beautifully written, powerful book for young people and adults alike. It’s also a gripping look at local history that I know will interest other local readers. This book club is an opportunity for our community to discuss books together in a casual and welcoming environment. For this book club, the author will not be in attendance. This month’s book is a children’s book but this is an adult book club.

Mary Lambert has always felt safe and protected on her beloved island of Martha’s Vineyard. Her great-great-grandfather was an early English settler and the first deaf islander. Now, over a hundred years later, many people there — including Mary — are deaf, and nearly everyone can communicate in sign language. Mary has never felt isolated. She is proud of her lineage.

But recent events have delivered winds of change. Mary’s brother died, leaving her family shattered. Tensions over land disputes are mounting between English settlers and the Wampanoag people. And a cunning young scientist has arrived, hoping to discover the origin of the island’s prevalent deafness. His maniacal drive to find answers soon renders Mary a “live specimen” in a cruel experiment. Her struggle to save herself is at the core of this penetrating and poignant novel that probes our perceptions of ability and disability.

This incredible book is the first in a trilogy about Mary Lambert that centers the d/Deaf experience in the early 19th century. If readers are interested in reading the series, the second book is Set Me Free which we have on our shelves, and the third book, Sail Me Home, will be published this November.

ABOUT BRANCH OUT BOOK CLUB

Branch Out Book Club focuses on reading and discussing books of various genres (mixing it up each month) featuring diverse voices. The club invites folks to try reading genres that they might not typically read. From poetry to fantasy, romance to horror, sci-fi to nonfiction.

This book club offers a casual and welcoming environment for the community to read together and to share thoughts and reflections, hosted by Titcomb’s Bookshop booksellers Caleb Seaver & Meghan Bousquet.
