Transatlantic Train: Boston, Liverpool, and Cape Cod Sea Captains, with Vincent Miles

Enoch Train was a poor orphan from a remote country village who somehow became one of the most important maritime figures in nineteenth-century Boston. He played a key role in the career of renowned shipbuilder Donald McKay, and operated Boston’s most successful transatlantic shipping line. And as you will hear, two of his most trusted captains were Cape Codders from maritime families—one of whom, sadly, was lost in tragic circumstances on a return voyage from Liverpool. Speaker Vincent J. Miles grew up in Liverpool, England, but has lived in the United States for close to forty years. He has written two previous books, BOYS OF THE CLOTH, about his experiences in Liverpool’s Catholic minor seminary, and THE LOST HERO OF CAPE COD, the story of an extraordinary nineteenth century mariner from Yarmouth Port, Captain Asa Eldridge, whose 1854 voyage from New York to Liverpool on the clipper ship Red Jacket, set a record that has never been beaten for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a sailing ship.
