The Christianization of Native Americans

A lecture on the 100-year history from 1600 to 1700 of religious persecution by the English in converting the Native American population at Plymouth Colony to “Praying Indians” will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 30, at the Native American wetu at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth in Yarmouth Port.

Nipmuc-Wampanoag Marcus Hendricks and local historian Bob Kelley will discuss the beliefs of the Indigenous Peoples prior to English settlements, their forced conversion to Christianity, the creation of an Indian College at Cambridge, the effect of magistrates from Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard on the Plymouth Colony Native Americans, King’s Philip’s War and more. More lectures on the topic will be held in June through August.

The attendance for the two-hour talk is limited to 25 but open to all age groups. Covid19 protocols will be followed. Tickets at $15 for nonmembers are offered online at www.hsoy.org under events listings. The wetu is on the grounds of the historical society behind the Yarmouth Port Post Office, Route 6A.
