The Cordial Eye is hosting its first annual gala to honor the celebration of Dia de Muertos or Day of the Dead. The event, called The Cordial Eye Ball, will take place on Thursday, November 2nd, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The gala will be held at TCE’s space, located at 255 Main Street in Hyannis. Tickets for the event are $35. Food will be catered by Blue Moon Mexican Restaurant and Buenos Aires Bakery.
The event’s highlight will be the Calaveras Competition, where TCE invites artists who have participated in the organization to create a Calavera in their unique style. Calavera de azucar translates to “skulls of sugar” and is commonly used to decorate ofrendas and tombstones during Dia de Muertos. An ofrenda is a home altar decorated with photos, flowers, and other significant familial symbols to honor those who have died. Artists will create their interpretation of a calavera using the art media of their choosing. TCE Ball attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite Calavera by donating to their favorite piece. Each dollar equals one vote and all proceeds will be split between the winning artist and TCE. Calaveras are due by November 2nd at 4:00 p.m.
If you’d like to honor a loved one who has passed away, consider donating to the TCE community ofrenda. For a donation of $35, one of TCE’s artists will create a piece of art honoring your loved one, which will be installed in their community ofrenda for November. After you donate, TCE will reach out and gather information about your person.
Co-Executive Director Mary George will be performing live mariachi music. All proceeds will support TCE’s programming for artists and community learners. This will be a colorful and festive event, so we invite you to come dressed in something that reflects the joy of the holiday.
