Based on the play, PARFUMERIE (1937), by Miklós László, and set in Budapest in 1934, SHE LOVES ME, is a romantic musical comedy centered around Georg Nowak and Amalia Balash, two employees at the shop. Despite their contentious working relationship, Georg and Amalia are, unknowingly, secret “pen pals” who correspond with one another and share their deepest thoughts and desires for finding the perfect soul mate. The excitement of discovering their connections, along with missed connections and mistaken identities, provide us with a whimsical journey of the heart. Along the way, we meet other employees at Mr. Maraczek’s Parfumerie as each of them seeks love and fulfillment. One of those employees, IIlona Ritter, a sales-clerk who is courted and romanced by Steven Kodaly, another employee at the shop, is surprised to discover that true love can be found in a most unexpected place-with an even more unexpected person. Arpad Laszlo aspires to be more than a delivery boy and works up the courage to speak up to Mr. Maraczek while Ladislav Sipos, another store clerk, finds contentment in the successful completion of each workday.
The beautifully rich score of SHE LOVES ME includes such well-known musical theatre songs such as, “Will He Like Me”, “Tonight at Eight”, “Try Me” and the show’s title song, “She Loves Me”.
