The Royal Treatment

The Royal Treatment

Presented by The Cape Cod Concert Band at Barnstable High School

You'll hear selections like All Shook Up, featuring the music of Elvis the King, and Queen in Concert—that’s Queen the rock band, not the ruler. The up-tempo march, Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite, by the aptly named Karl King, honors P.T. Barnum, the King of the American Circus. Hollywood royalty is also accounted for, in selections from Maurice Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia. Not to forget the proper royals, the concert opens with Franz Joseph Haydn’s March for the Prince of Wales, a nod to King Charles and his son William. And later on the program, the Band will perform a moving excerpt from Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations that was played at the 1953 coronation of the beloved and long-reigning Queen Elizabeth.

The lords of the Celtic lands get their due, too, in Andrew Boyson's Kirkpatrick Fanfare, complete with a musical surprise, and the mythical kingdom of Camelot comes to life in David Shaffner’s sweeping Legend of the Sword. In a 2017 work, Renaissance Reimagined, by Brian Balmages, courtly style and contemporary sound converge. And because every kingdom needs defending, the program will also feature Fortress, written by Frank Tichelli, an American composer who is revered by many as wind ensemble royalty.

The Cape Cod Concert Band, an all-volunteer 45-piece wind and percussion ensemble, is conducted by Tom Borning. Also the director of the Falmouth Town Band, Mr. Borning plays trumpet across New England, and is the host and creator of The Everything Music Ed Podcast, set to launch later this year. The CCCB is funded by audience donations, business supporters, and grants from the Mass Cultural Council, the Elizabeth B. McGraw Foundation, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent.
