Artist Reception: Terry Gips & Nancy Jenner

Artist Reception: Terry Gips & Nancy Jenner

at Unknown

Artists Terry Gips and Nancy Jenner’s work examines our relationship with nature to acknowledge our surroundings are part of us. Jenner explores our relationship to, and impact on, the natural world. Gips asks viewers to look deeper and see our connectedness with nature. Formally and conceptually, there is a reflective quality to their work. The cut pieces of Jenner’s coastlines and the macro view of Gips’ plant diptychs offer viewers opportunities to observe and imagine familiar elements anew.

About the artists:
- Terry Gips bonded with nature and the environment as a child growing up in rural Central New York. As she evolved as an artist working with various media, she immersed herself in both landscapes and the details of plants, fascinated by their simultaneous order and chaos.
- Nancy Jenner lives in Boston and Wellfleet. The photographs for this series were taken at the dunes, ocean and bay beaches of the National Seashore. Originally used as references for oil paintings, they are cut and reconfigured to create the Climate Change series. Just as the photographs find a second life in these collages, the frames are reclaimed from thrift store finds and frame store trash bins in an act of intentional reuse. These imagined landscapes disrupt expectations and cause us to consider our role in the changing climate.
