A Postcard Presentation & Poetry Reading with Alice Kociemba, founding director, Calliope Poetry, and Jennifer Rose, author, Hometown for an Hour.
Calliope Poetry celebrates National Poetry Month with its new project, "Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past." Alice Kociemba will present a slide show of a curated selection from the historical postcard collection of the Falmouth Public Library. She will issue an invitation to Falmouth residents to use these postcards to interpret the story of Falmouth's past and present by creating new literary and visual art that responds to the postcard collection. Jennifer Rose will read a selection of her postcard poems and will describe the process of crafting postcard poems that create through their brevity an immediate connection to a specific place.
In the Q & A with the audience, Alice and Jennifer will describe ways to use these postcards as inspiration for writing a new prose or narrative poem. In addition to using these postcards as writing prompts, these postcards are an invitation to capture through photographing the "now" of how Falmouth has changed, as well as what remains essential to the unique character of Falmouth. Calliope Poetry's project is funded, in part, from a grant by the Falmouth Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the Town of Falmouth and the Falmouth ArtMarket.
