“Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage” Display at Falmouth Art Center

Presented by Falmouth Art Center at Falmouth Art Center

Turning trash into art is not a new concept, but the Cape Cod group that calls themselves Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG) is taking that concept to the next level.

Established in 2018 by Susan Baur of North Falmouth to remove underwater trash from ponds across Cape Cod, the group is comprised of strong women swimmers from age 64 to 83.

The exhibit at Falmouth Art Center on display from Feb 3 - 27 will feature photographs taken by OLAUG member Diane Hammer and hopes to prove “bad trash can sometimes make good art.”

“From the view underwater, tires, sunken boats, cans and balls looked surreal in a murky haze of green water.” Ms. Baur said, “On the surface the weathered colors, diverse shapes, and textures of the weathered litter combined to form intricate abstract designs.”

The Falmouth Art Center located at 137 Gifford Street in Falmouth is free and open to the public daily, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm; Saturday 10am to 2pm and Sunday 1 to 4pm. For more information, go to FalmouthArt.org or call 508-540-3304.
