Tropical Holiday: Musical Sunshine to Celebrate the Season

Tropical Holiday: Musical Sunshine to Celebrate the Season

Presented by Cape Cod Concert Band at Knight Auditorium at Barnstable High School

Are you pining for more sunshine on these dark December days? For a seasonal celebration with a Latin groove, join the Cape Cod Concert Band, under the direction of Tom Borning.

From the gentle island rhythms of Jamaican Sailaway by Allen Stein to the steamy drama of Street Tango by the beloved Argentinian master composer, Astor Piazzolla, here's a program that's certain to warm a winter's day. Frank Ticheli’s Sun Dance is a nod to the light we humans seek, and Christmas Calypso by Stephen Bulla is the perfect mash-up of traditional tunes and Caribbean good cheer. Another heat-seeking highlight is a musical postcard from 1859 Guadeloupe: Louis Gottshalk’s, A Night in the Tropics, arranged by Mark Williams.

Dashing through sand to snow, the Band will perform the Leroy Anderson classic, Sleigh Ride, and you’ll also hear some fresh new versions of familiar tunes. Get ready for A Rollicking Hanukah, a top-speed medley arranged by Randall D. Standridge. The perfect calming counterpoint is Mark Willam’s A Winter’s Carol, a lovely and haunting theme and variations on O Come O Come Emmanuel. And no Latin holiday would be complete without a rousing arrangement by Tom Wallace and Tony McCutchen of José Feliciano’s joyful Feliz Navidad, guaranteed to send you home humming.

The Cape Cod Concert Band is an all-volunteer 45-piece wind and percussion ensemble conducted by Tom Borning. Also the conductor of the Falmouth Town Band, Mr. Borning is the lead trumpet in the Compaq Big Band and an award-winning music educator. The Cape Cod Concert Band is funded by audience donations, business supporters, and grants from the Cape Cod Melody Tent and the Elizabeth B. McGraw Foundation.  Visit www.capecodconcertband.org to learn more.
