Learn to make a rya rug — a traditional Scandinavian wool rug
This workshop is appropriate for weavers and non-weavers. Learn to make a rya rug — a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches. Rya rugs can be used for bench seats, area floor rugs, or wall decorations. No loom is required (though Gretchen will share instructions for weaving the backing).
Gretchen will provide attendees with rug backings she has woven in the Norwegian style out of linen and wool. Rug backing cloth will be available to attendees in various sizes at a charge of $25.00 per square foot. You will learn to stitch Wool rug yarn into the backing material to make a pile (or shag) surface. Materials costs for participants will include rug wool, tapestry needle, and 12” square rug backing, (participants can choose to use a larger rug backing based on Gretchen’s square foot cost above).
Materials fee of $50 (for a 12″ x 12″ rug) or $95 (for a 12″ x 24″ rug) due to the instructor by cash or check on the day of the workshop.
