Journeys: Opening Reception

Presented by Woodruff's Art Center at Woodruff's Art Center

Focusing on the “Journey” can shine light on what you get from working on reaching your goals.  The trick is to enjoy the unfolding of the process.

Catherine C. Haynes is an en plein air artist whose work reflects her time spent on Cape Cod and throughout New England. She has had the opportunity to travel worldwide and many of her new works depict European destinations. Her past emphasis utilized pastels in a traditional landscape format.  Her journey now is to transfer her expertise in pastels to oil paints.  Ms. Haynes concentrates on color and form to paint the fleeting moments in time when the sun and the atmosphere create vibrancy among the land and sea.

Ms. Haynes states, “Painting is a lengthy process of continual learning, just as in life. There are many detours and the trek is to continually learn and ultimately experience success.”

One of her featured oil paintings, “Dune Path,” illustrates the warmth of summer color in the National Seashore dunes.  The path literally leads you into the painting, and the vibrancy of the sunset illuminates the sky and the path becomes a journey for the viewer.

Ms. Haynes has been a resident of Truro for over 30 years and enjoys her time painting on the Outer Cape. Her work has been featured in galleries throughout New England, including on Newbury Street in Boston where she exhibited with celebrated American artist Wolf Khan.  She traveled extensively with Lois Griffel, impressionist painter and director of the Cape Cod School of Art, who later led artists from around the country to paint on the Amalfi coast.

Ms. Haynes has studied at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, MA; Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI; the Worcester Art Museum School in Worcester, MA, University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Program and in France with the “Art in Provence” program.
