Two Artist, Two Journeys Art Reception

Two Artist, Two Journeys Art Reception

Presented by Woodruff's Art Center at Woodruff's Art Center

Two Cape Cod artists, each on their own personal creative journey have developed a friendship through art built on a common goal of continuous learning. While their creative paths have been different, sharing feedback, perspective and support has helped each build a strong foundation. This exhibit features a broad variety from figures to non-objective abstracts reflecting the present work of each artist.

Patty Calkins Martin has been experimenting with the infinite possibilities with oil/ cold wax. She is intrigued with the “history” created and revealed with multiple layers of paint. Featured are both abstracted figure compositions and pure non- objective abstracts. Her journey began with silversmithing in her teens. Being a scientist at heart, she is always drawn to experimenting - new techniques, materials, concepts, etc. Watercolor, acrylics, collage, drawing tools, pen & ink, oils and other marking materials fill Patty’s studio. Landscapes, seascapes, still- life, animals, figures and abstracts are all captured in her portfolio. She continually works to peel back the layers of life experiences to reconnect with essence of her creative “art spirit”. Her works have appeared in many juried exhibits, won awards and are found in personal collections in the US and abroad.

Margaret Nowak’s work ranges from intimate interiors to still life, florals and landscapes, while drawing and painting the contemplative figure from life takes her out of her comfort zone. Introduced to painting 20+ years ago, she pursued and dedicated herself to learning the craft and strengthening her drawing skills. Abstracts and the abstraction of an image is new for her. Margaret uses color, shape, line, texture and pattern to express and interpret the character and mood of a space or place. She digs deep into her emotions and life experiences when working abstractly. The concepts of change, loss, abandonment, hope, love, renewal and home influence her work, infused with a sense of familiarity. This creative journey was sparked by her first response to a call for “artists reminiscing” and she has since come full circle to rediscover more fully, her life experiences, images and memories and their expression. Travels to and from Southern Africa, British Isles, South America, the States, and growing up in South

Africa provide endless inspiration to explore different directions in her art. Sources of inspiration come from tribal and primitive patterns, the patterns of birds and animals, the ocean, her garden, patterns of light in spaces and the bold and sensitive world of color.

Two Artists - Two Journeys exudes the enlightenment that two artists/two friends have achieved through joint encouragement to grow as artists through new explorations.
