About the Puppeteer:

Kerry Burke-Mackenzie
MS, NYS Certified Art Teacher k-12
Art Education Adjunct Professor LIU

Kerry Burke-Mackenzie is currently the creator and principal puppeteer of ‘Miss Potters Storytelling Puppet Theater.’ This performance has the honor of being a finalist for The Jim Henson Foundation Grant.

‘The Transposed Heads’, ‘Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass’ and later ‘The Lion King’ are Kerry’s experience as puppet fabricator and puppeteer for Julie Taymor. Kerry created life-size bunraku-style puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets, and life mask puppets. Kerry also performed at Lincoln Center, The American Music Theater Festival, and toured nationally and internationally.

As a principal puppeteer in Ken Moses ‘Pickwick Puppet Theater’ Kerry danced with larger than life rod puppets that were supported in a waist harness to classical music. The productions of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Pulcinella’ were performed at colleges and theaters throughout the country. Kerry played ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at Lincoln Center and Pulcinella won a UNIMA citation for excellence in puppetry.

Using techniques learned from Julie Taymor and commissioned by the MTA Arts for Transit, Kerry created ‘The Astounding Subterranean Circus’ in the 46th street subway station in Queens.

The Falmouth Art Center commissioned Kerry in 2016 to create a puppet show to accompany an exhibition of African art. Kerry created the puppets, the stage, the music, and directed two puppeteers for the performances.

As Adjunct Professor Kerry taught units of body puppetry, shadow puppetry and stop motion puppetry. ‘Imagination and Transformation: Performing a Universal Narrative Theme’ was published in Art Education Journal in November 2015.

Kerry Burke-Mackenzie’s goal in creating ‘Miss Potters Storytelling Puppet Theater’ is to create a memorable experience for small childen through the wonder of puppetry and storytelling.
