Beatrix, Thornton, and the Tale of Two Peter Rabbits

Beatrix, Thornton, and the Tale of Two Peter Rabbits

Presented by Cape Cod Museum of Natural History at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

Christie Palmer Lowrance, author of Nature’s Ambassador: The Legacy of Thornton W. Burgess and Betsy Bray, an international authority on Beatrix Potter, will discuss well-known differences and fascinating little-known similarities between the two esteemed 20th century children’s authors.  First published in 1902 and 1910 respectively, Potter and Burgess’ children’s books were a near-instant success in the dawning years of children’s literature and have continued to be popular into the 21st century.

Betsy Bray has served as the North American Liaison Officer and Website Manager for The Beatrix Potter Society and has been a member since 1984. In 2012, she became the first overseas Trustee ever elected to The Beatrix Potter Society. She has spoken at several of the Society’s International Study Conferences and has given illustrated talks to various groups in the United States, United Kingdom, Africa and Australia. Betsy lectured about Beatrix Potter on a transatlantic crossing of the Queen Mary 2. Betsy has a master’s degree in Library Science and lives in Chatham.

Christie Lowrance’s news and feature articles have appeared in the Boston Globe, Cape Cod Times, Barnstable Patriot, Cape Cod Life and many other publications. For many years she was a travel editor for Fodor’s Cape Cod, Insider’s Guide, and Cape Cod Travel Guide, and Is a published poet and songwriter.  As an adjunct instructor, Christie taught composition at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Cape Cod Community College. At present she is writing the biography of Dr. George F. Bass, widely considered “the father of underwater archaeology.”
