The Library is pleased to host award-winning children’s non-fiction writer Michelle Cusolito on Wednesday, July 21st at 6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public. Michelle is the Library’s first Sue Griglun Author, an endowed program supporting a children’s author every summer. The program was founded in memory of the late Sue Griglun, a tireless, beloved volunteer at the Library. Sue served on the Board of Directors and chaired the House Tour and Book Sale for many years. She is sorely missed by all.
“Curiosity, Research and Revision” – Writing an interesting and compelling non-fiction book requires deep research by the author. Oftentimes, the direction you thought your book would take changes based on the information you uncover. In this interactive program, Michelle shares real-life examples of how Flying Deep was shaped by her research. Through the use of photographs and exciting props, Michelle also brings students on a journey of discovery about Alvin and hydrothermal vent communities.

Special for this session! Be the first to hear behind the scenes stories from Michelle’s recent research trip to the North Atlantic with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Michelle’s third book will be based on this trip.

Michelle Cusolito’s debut non-fiction picture book, Flying Deep: Climb Inside Deep-Sea Submersible Alvin, was awarded the PEN-NE Susan P. Bloom Children’s Book Discovery Award and was named a “Must Read” at the Massachusetts Book Awards. It was also on the Kirkus Best Books list and the NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Books list. Michelle’s second book, Diving Deep: Using Machines to Explore the Ocean, will be published by Charlesbridge in June 2022.
