Grounded

Presented by Cotuit Center for the Arts at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the return of the hit play “Grounded,” a play by George Brant, directed by Robert Bock. The play was originally presented in the Black Box Theater in 2017 to great acclaim and packed houses, and we are thrilled to bring it back on the Main Stage.

The main character, an ace fighter pilot, has always taken pride in her work, but an unexpected pregnancy cuts short her career in the blue skies. She is reassigned to ground duty, which she refers to as the “Chair Force,” in a windowless trailer in the gray desert outside of Las Vegas.

Now her job is to operate remote-controlled military drones, hunting terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan by day and living an ordinary life with her husband and young daughter at night. Killing by remote control keeps her safe, but it does not protect her from the psychological toll of warfare. As the pressure to track a high-profile target mounts, boundaries begin to blur between the desert where she lives and the one she patrols half a world away.

Anna Botsford plays the conflicted fighter pilot. Ms. Botsford, IB Theatre teacher and director at Sturgis Charter Public School West, has appeared in numerous productions at Cotuit Center for the Arts—including “Unsafe,” “Bark Park,” “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “The Woods Hole Plays,” “84 Charing Cross Road,” “Boston Marriage,” “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,” “The Thirty-Nine Steps,” and “Much Ado About Nothing”—as well as productions at other Cape venues.

Mr. Brant has described the play as “about moral responsibility and contradictory choices... It is a worst-case scenario for the question of whether it’s possible to be in two different places at once, for those trying to have it all.”
