This class will address both surface design which implies intent even before the pot is formed, and surface decoration which requires skillful application of techniques that highlight the strengths of a particular piece.
The first challenge with surface decoration goes straight back to the notion that one should have an idea of what their finished pot will look like from the time they throw the ball of clay on to the wheel or run it through the slab roller.
The second challenge is the difference between surface design and surface decoration. It is difficult to approach decoration without talking about design. Decoration implies technique, design implies intent. The intent-ful application of a technique on a form to highlight the strengths of a particular piece.
In this class we will begin to address both, with demonstrations including a number of decorating techniques, and exploration of why and how one makes decisions regarding which technique to use. You will get the most out of this class if you use open studio time to create some of your pieces so you have plenty of “canvas” to decorate in class.
Sketching will be super important in this class. If you don’t already regularly bring a sketchbook to class, please buy an inexpensive one. Sketches on paper often lead to sketches in clay before a motif feels resolved.
*All classes include 25 pounds of clay, and the glazing and firing of those 25#. Additional clay may be purchased if needed. Beginner tool kits may be purchased for $24.
Classes also include ample access to the studio during open studio hours. Ceramics is an art form that benefits from practice and social time outside of class time.
Class size is limited to six students. The Meetinghouse Clay Center adheres to CDC and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Covid-19 protocols for social distancing and face coverings, and has hand-washing and sanitizing stations.
