Take a break from everything and come make art in a welcoming and supportive environment with artist and educator Melanie Gillis. Studio Art 101 is designed for students of any level interested in creating art in a studio setting at their own pace. No experience is required – come and learn how to use a variety of mediums in a relaxed and stress-free class. If it’s been awhile since you last worked in studio, you are welcome to come and work in your preferred medium as well as try out some new techniques. This is an opportunity to explore charcoal, watercolor, acrylics, and mixed media. Individual instruction/feedback will be given as you develop your personal approach. If you discover a preferred medium, you are welcome to focus on it for the remaining classes. Projects will be based on abstract prompts, reference images, and still life setups. Based on interest & availability we will have a class working from a live model.

Bring a snack, sense of humor, and art-friendly clothing. Try just one class or take all six!
Social distancing is observed and masks are required.

What to bring to class? Basics suggested below -- bring what you like to work with!
Pencil #2, eraser
Sketch pad – mixed media paper 8x10 or larger
Watercolor set & brush
Acrylics: paints- a basic starter set or individual tubes to include:
Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red, Phthalo Blue
Brushes – bring a few small & medium brushes
Palette knife with an angled handle – great for mixing and use to paint with ☺
Plastic palette, enamel pie plate, or plastic-coated paper plates to mix on
Paper towel roll or rags
Small jar with lid for water/medium
Surfaces to work on:
2 or 3 canvas boards 8x10 or 9x12 (larger if you like)
watercolor pad of paper 9x12 or larger
