Anna Murfen will teach a new slip decoration technique each week as an in-depth introduction to the world of colored clay slips and the use of slips for texture on either thrown or hand-built pieces.
Slip is basically clay hydrated to anywhere from a pudding-like to a cream-like consistancy, used for many different decorating techniques on our wet to leather hard ceramic pieces. Explore colored clay slips for texture, expression and new ideas. This class will be an in-depth introduction to the world of colored clay slips and the use of slips for texture on either thrown pieces or hand built pieces. A new slip decoration technique will be covered each week in class. The techniques demonstrated will include, sgraffito, hakume, mishima, slip trailing, slip marbling and slip stencils and resists, among others .
This class will not be teaching basic throwing or hand building techniques and students should be able to make vessels or forms independently to decorate in class, though we may demonstrate some throwing and hand-building techniques as they relate to the decorating we are doing.
