Jewelry can subvert and transform mundane, everyday objects into something valuable and beautiful, an object of desire. Question your pre-conceptions of what jewelry is, how jewelry should be worn, and what jewelry should be made of. Use paper, felt, safety pins, plastic bags, Saran wrap and hardware fixings to name but a few materials to make interesting, arresting and unusual jewelry. Found objects and the idea of bricolage, the practice of transforming found materials by incorporating them in a new work, or simply the juxtaposition of strange and foreign objects beside more mundane counterparts, will also be explored.
As well as unusual materials the fundamentals of bead stringing, wire wrapping and end fastenings will be covered so that students will have a fully rounded ability to make jewelry from start to finish.
