Students from Sturgis Public Charter School’s East and West campuses will perform one act plays at Cape Cod Theatre Company in Harwich, MA. Following the performances, which run from February 7-9, both schools will participate in the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG) Festival, a competitive event that includes 112 one-act plays produced by member high schools. Sturgis qualified for semifinals 4 times in the past 6 years.

Sturgis East will be performing Mother Courage and Her Children, a one act play by Bertolt Brecht. The play is co-directed by Diana Young, East’s theater teacher and Julia Keeling, a student at East. Mother Courage and Her Children follows the fortunes of Anna Fierling, nicknamed Mother Courage, who is determined to make a living during wartime, but in the end it destroys her family and she loses all three of her children. Sturgis West will be performing Dark Road by Laura Lundgren Smith. The play is co-directed by Anna Botsford, West’s theater teacher and Ava Mark and Patrick Tompkins, students at West. The play, which takes place in Germay, is a powerful drama about the choices a person can make that allow evil to become ordinary. The story follows a women’s shift to the “evil side” after she becomes a guard in a women’s concentration camp and shows how her kind-hearted sister deals with her transformation.

The local performances will take place at Cape Cod Theatre Company in West Harwich.
