The Cape Cod Concert Band celebrates the solstice with a program of upbeat selections guaranteed to make you smile.
“Happiness is two kinds of ice cream,” Charlie Brown says in a song. That's one reason this program will feature a musical tribute to that venerable provider of summertime joy, Four Seas Ice Cream. Written in the spirit of a cartoon score, the piece by Yarmouth composer Michael Donovan is excerpted from Portraits of Cape Cod, a suite in eight movements, commissioned and premiered by the CCCB in 2016. Another crowd-pleasing Cape Cod institution, the Chatham Band, inspired Donovan to write The Whit Tileston Band Stand, also drawn from the larger work. For this performance, the lively march will feature Sawyer Lawler on snare, Nancy Gross on piccolo and Holly Anderson on tuba. Michael Donovan will conduct both movements.
But wait--the CCCB has plenty more than two flavors to share: other program highlights include music from Mary Poppins, Charlie Brown’s Christmas, and a mash-up of Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever with just about every holiday tune you can name. It's seasonal music that’s not your standard fare, and musical surprises that know no season. All chosen and performed to maximize Happiness.
