Nursery Crimes: Edward Gorey's Morbid Nonsense

Nursery Crimes: Edward Gorey's Morbid Nonsense

Presented by Edward Gorey House at Yarmouth New Church (now Thacher Hall)

Mark Dery, author of the 2018 Born to Be Posthumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey, examines the influence of literary and artistic Nonsense, from Edward Lear to Samuel Beckett, Dada to Absurdism, on Gorey’s artistic vision. He delves deep into the surprisingly serious themes woven through Gorey’s oeuvre—death, the meaning of life, the ghastliness of fruitcakes—and entertainingly reveals Gorey's sinister whimsy. Dery’s lecture pairs nicely with the Edward Gorey House’s 2019 exhibit “Hippity Wippity: Edward Gorey and the Language of Nonsense,” currently on view across the street.
