Unrepentant English major/retired judge Gregory Williams and pianist Jacqueline Schwab (Ken Burns’s “Civil War”) celebrate Herman Melville’s 200th birthday–on the day–with words by and about the author, and with music of his times. And with cake.
Herman Melville--author of "Moby-Dick," "Bartleby, the Scrivener," "Benito Cereno," "Billy Budd, Sailor"--was born on August 1, 1819. We celebrate that 200th birthday in a fantastic building constructed when Melville was about 50 years old--the New Church (not new, but spectacularly perserved, and no longer a church), Yarmouth Port. Words by and about Melville, and music of the 19th century as only Jacqueline Schwab, pianist (12 Ken Burns films), can play it. Cape ties? Melville married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shaw, daughter of West Barnstable's legendary Judge Lemuel Shaw. . . and then there are all those Cape and Islands characters in the whaling novel itself. Plus. . . cake.
