During the American Revolution, the first death-penalty case in the newly-minted US involved Sandwich’s Bathsheba Spooner, her teen-aged Continental Army soldier lover, and two escaped British Army soldiers. And Bathsheba’s ill-fated husband.
Sandwich-born Bathsheba Ruggles Spooner, the notoriously "spirited" daughter of one of the most-hated Tories in revolutionary Massachusetts, was unhappy in her marriage--so she brokered a truce between her teen-aged Continental Army soldier lover and two escaped British Army soldiers. The body of Joshua Spooner was soon found, and the four perpetrators faced the noose in 1778 Worcester. . . .
