Step Outside-Plein Air Painting with Betsy Payne Cook

Step Outside-Plein Air Painting with Betsy Payne Cook

Presented by Cultural Center of Cape Cod at Cultural Center of Cape Cod

All mediums welcome! This class is devoted to the experience of painting on location! Beginners to painting en plein air are welcome but if you paint in a medium other than pastel you should have a good working knowledge of your medium. Betsy paints in pastels but information shared in class will apply to other drawing & painting mediums as well. Painting outdoors is an exhilarating experience, and this class is ideal for artists who want to take the challenge of stepping outdoors to paint! Whether you are a novice or an experienced painter, the opportunity to paint together outdoors is rewarding. Betsy notices that her time plein air painting makes a difference to how she approaches pastel painting when she is in her studio. Each week we will paint at a spot that is either walking distance from the Cultural Center of Cape Cod or a short drive away giving participants a variety of local scenes. Class will begin with a pastel painting demo at each site at 8:30 am, and Betsy will share pointers for setting up on location and narrowing the field of vision to choose a composition for your painting. Goals will include developing sketching and planning skills, painting masses, simplifying shapes and details and selecting color harmonies. You will receive individual feedback and coaching while you work at your easel. On days that the weather does not cooperate, typically rain or high winds, the class will meet at the Cultural Center for a studio painting class.
