Portrait Sculpture, Spring 2019

Portrait Sculpture, Spring 2019

Presented by Cotuit Center for the Arts at Cotuit Center for the Arts

For beginner and intermediate sculptors, this six-week class will teach you how to sculpt the head in clay and give you the practice you need to achieve a good likeness. Working with a live model, instructor Neil Grant will lead you through a step by step process to learn how to look at a person, simplify what you are seeing and then sculpt a realistic likeness. At each stage of the process, Neil will explain the theory, give a demonstration of the technique, and then work one on one with you as you create your sculpture. The aim of the workshop is to give students a method they can take away with them and use to make great portrait sculptures in the future.

“Sculpting can be great fun but to get a realistic likeness, you need to learn a process. The aim of this class is to teach beginners that process in a series of logical steps and to allow more experienced students to practice under guidance and to receive feedback and help. The atmosphere of the class is fun and friendly but at the same time you’ll be learning solid techniques you can take away with you,” says Neil.

Stands and tools will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own preferred
tools if they have them.
The included $30 materials fee provides sculpting tools, clay, stands, firing of the final piece, and a live model.
