Poetry Workshop: Poems in a Single Breath: The Art of Haiku, Presented by Rich Youmans

Poetry Workshop: Poems in a Single Breath: The Art of Haiku, Presented by Rich Youmans

Presented by Falmouth Art Center at Falmouth Art Center

Haiku has been defined as “the essence of a moment keenly perceived.” This session will explore what a haiku is (and is not), how poets have used the building blocks of the form to re-create moments that are often overlooked, and how haiku can even be combined with prose and art to re-create meaningful experiences. There will be an opportunity to try your hand at writing haiku and its cousin, the haibun (a combination of prose and haiku).

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Rich Youmans has been writing haibun and related essays for 25 years, and he still wonders where the time went. His work has appeared internationally in various journals and anthologies, and his books include Shadow Lines (a collection of linked haibun written with Oregon poet Maggie Chula), All the Windows Lit (Snapshot Press e-book), and Head-On: Haibun Stories. He lives in North Falmouth with his wife, Alice Kociemba.
