February 23rd: Structure, Function, Adaptations
Is it a loon, a grebe or a duck? What makes it a hawk or a falcon? During each class we will study and learn, through photographs and discussion, how birds are classified and easily identified. Each student will receive a copy of “A Guide to the Common Birds of Cape Cod” as well as hand-outs to read and study.
March 2nd: Habitats and Habitat Preference
We’ll discuss and learn through photographs and discussion various habitats including the sea to the beaches, to the woodlands, marshes and ponds, of birds on Cape Cod.
March 9th: Field Marks
In this lesson, we’ll gain an understanding of which field marks to look for in different families of birds. Streaked breast or plain breast? Wing bars or no wing bars? Leg color? Yes, leg color. How are males and females different? Does the bird have a distinctive crown or eye stripe? We’ll finish the class with a field trip to put our lessons to the test.
