Skeleton Puppet Making Workshop

Skeleton Puppet Making Workshop

Presented by Provincetown's Annual Day of the Dead Festival at Truro Center for the Arts

The skeleton, calavera or calaca in Spanish, is an icon in Mexican art, especially in the Mexican folk traditions of El Día de los Muertos wherein the skeleton is a reminder to live a good life as time is short and death inevitable. Skeleton puppets have come to play an especially significant role in Day of the Dead processions, where they are held high as they dance through the night air. Join us in creating giant skeleton puppets to carry in Provincetown’s Day of the Dead Procession on November 2. This is a three-part workshop. In the first class, we will build armatures for the body parts of our skeletons. In the second class, we will cover them with paper mache. In the third class, once the paper mache is dry, we will paint detailed anatomy and decorate them with bright colors and glitter. We encourage you to attend all three classes, but you are welcome to attend just one or two as your schedule allows.
