Visual Research and Painting from Source Material with Pete Hocking

Visual Research and Painting from Source Material with Pete Hocking

Presented by Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) at Provincetown Art Association and Museum

Painters draw inspiration from sources, be it observation, experience, dreams, imagination, objects, writing, photographs, mirrors, drawings, or other manifestations of visual culture. Approaching painting as a subjective art form, this workshop will consider ways artists undertake visual research and transform source material (as opposed to simply reproducing it) into original artworks. It is designed to develop several new paintings (ideally one a day). Participants are encouraged to bring source material of interest to them and, weather permitting; we'll also engage in short field trips to do visual research in town. The course is designed for students interested in oil or acrylic painting, but multimedia approaches are also encouraged.

Pete Hocking is a visual artist and writer working between Providence, RI & Provincetown, MA. He's represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, MA. In addition to regularly showing at Four Eleven Gallery, in the past year he’s shown with The Dorado Project in Jersey City, NJ and the Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA. He has an upcoming show at the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI in September 2018. He teaches at Goddard College in the Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts program and in the Division of Liberal Arts at Rhode Island School of Design.  He's a founding board member of the Provincetown Commons, an economic development center for the arts and creative economy.
