Paintings by Cricket George and woodturning and carving by Susan Beardsley, Bob Beardsley, Michael Grady, Robin McIntyre, Toby Lorenzen, and Gary Tabor will be on display at the Maser Gallery from July 1 through August 3, 2018. The public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday, July 1, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

Cricket George – Upon retirement, Cricket decided to pursue her desire to work in acrylics, painting landscapes. She began under the tutelage of Barry Jones-Henry at the Mashpee Senior Center, and soon joined the Falmouth Artist’s Guild, where she has taken classes with Dan Hanagan, Robert Roark, and Claudia Smith-Jacobs. A second-generation native of Falmouth, she is particularly interested in painting scenes from the local area.  Having spent several years in California, there are areas there which also captured her imagination.  Her paintings reflect her love of water on both coasts.

Susan Beardsley - Sue is an artist who works with glass, metal, wood and fiber, using recycled material almost entirely. These “raw” materials have been found at the dump, in dumpsters, alongside the road or in the woods. Her “found” sculptures are popular in local public and private collections. More recently, she learned to use a lathe in a woodturning class at a crafts school, and was able to rekindle her love of working with wood that started when she was seven years old.

Bob Beardsley - Bob and his wife, Susan, attended a woodworking class years ago after which he began making furniture with maple, cherry and other fine woods. Three years ago he joined a woodturning club, bought a lathe, and now he, too, is making bowls and vases from cedar and other fine woods. “I love to work with wood,” exclaims Bob.

Michael Grady - Michael has been an active woodworker for twenty years. “The pieces that I design and make tend to be decorative pieces on the smaller scale,” says Michael, “although I do make larger utility pieces as well, such as bowls, boxes, platters, and vases. The approach I take to my art is both technical and creative.”  Michael serves as Programs Director for the Cape Cod Woodturners and is the Vice President of the Western Massachusetts Woodturners.  He is a member of the American Association of Woodturners.

Robin McIntyre - Robin McIntyre has been turning wood as a hobby for 7 years.  She has been active in Cape Cod Woodturners as secretary/newsletter editor/photographer and has been demonstrating for public events, mentoring, and participating in club show and sale events. She is the organizer of the Cape Cod Woodturners Women in Turning and participated as an instructor for beginner woodturning classes offered at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. She is interested in more functional forms in wood which accentuate the grain in the wood.

Toby Lorenzen- A couple of years ago, Toby (Torben) Lorenzen retired from teaching computer science at Bridgewater State University to focus on his love of woodturning. “I delight in collaborating,” he says, and has collaborated on projects with fellow woodturners, as well as on fairy houses for the popular Highfield Hall show. “My goal,” explains Toby, “is to release a little more beauty into the world.”

Gary Tabor - Gary once had the opportunity to become a welder and used that skill to work his way through graduate school in Psychology. But since childhood he has been fascinated by working with wood. “With wood creations, I don’t draw or design the piece before working on it,” Gary reveals, “but more respond to what I find in the wood. Each creation is as unique as the piece of wood it starts with.”
