Edward and Josephine Hopper: A Lecture and Look into the Artists’ Lives with Christine McCarthy

Edward and Josephine Hopper: A Lecture and Look into the Artists’ Lives with Christine McCarthy

Presented by Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) at Provincetown Art Association and Museum

This lecture will trace their years on Cape Cod as we look at the original studies for some of Hopper’s most significant paintings, journal entries recorded by Josephine and a short film produced by the National Gallery in Washington, DC. We will be displaying select journals, letters, and drawings from our permanent collection.

Christine McCarthy is the Executive Director of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in Provincetown, MA (since 2001). McCarthy is responsible for all artistic, administrative, fiscal and strategic directions of the largest presenter of Cape Cod art by national, regional and international artists. Programs include visual arts exhibitions, educational initiatives for children and adults, publications, lectures and performances.  In 2006, under the direction of McCarthy, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum was awarded Silver LEED Certification as the first “green” art museum in the country upon successful completion of a five million dollar renovation and expansion project. One of McCarthy’s most recent projects includes curating Edward and Josephine Hopper from the Permanent Collection – an acquisition of 96 drawings by Edward and 69 works of art by Josephine, in addition to diaries, letters and ephemera.

Since 1985, McCarthy has worked in numerous galleries and museums in New England. They include the Hunt-Cavanagh Gallery at Providence College; the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT; The Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY; and The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA. She received a BA from Providence College in Providence, RI and an MA from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. She was an adjunct professor at Boston University’s Metropolitan College for 13 years.
