Six Wednesday classes: 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9. This class is primarily a beginning exploration of clay using the potters’ wheel. A few simple hand building basics will be introduced depending on the student’s interest. We will explore this magical material called clay through a mix of demonstration, individualized instruction, lots of wheel time and fun. On the wheel we will practice centering the clay, the steps to then make a cylinder, which is the starting point for many forms, and finally, trimming the bottom of the pot. Our last class will be learning to apply glaze to the pottery. Each class will have plenty of hands on time along with demonstrations and individualized instruction. Basic vocabulary will be introduced as an important part of learning about the techniques, tools and equipment for working with clay. All tools, materials, and firings are included. Beginners and refreshers are welcome. This class meets in the Pottery Studio on the lower level of the Education Wing.
