6 Thursday classes: 2/22, 3/1, 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29. This class is for the student who is newly comfortable with throwing a basic cylinder and bowl form on the potter's wheel. We will expand on our basic vocabulary and techniques of working on the potter's wheel. Starting off with a mug form students will explore the connection between form and function. Various mug shapes and types of handles will be our starting point , followed by learning about spouts and the pitcher form. On to learning to use calipers to measure and make a simple cap style lid for a basic jar form is next. These are all starting points from which to explore further the relationship between making a pleasing form that is also functional. Some simple, fun surface design techniques will round out the class. Demonstrations, individualized instruction and plenty of hands on time round out our class. Books, handouts and examples of pottery will be available to reinforce lessons. All tools, materials, and firings are provided. This class meets in the pottery studio on the lower level of the Education Wing.
