Paintings by San Lyman will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from December 6, 2015 through January 8, 2016.  The public is invited to the Opening Reception, Sunday, December 6, from 3:00 to 5:00PM.

San Lyman grew up in New York City. There, she studied for years with Margery Ryerson in Margery’s Carnegie Hall studios.  (Ms. Ryerson was editor of Robert Henri’s acclaimed book, “The Art Spirit” and, among other accomplishments, was a founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown.)  San graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1953, San moved to Cape Cod.  She helped Edie Bruce in stripping and painting the floors of the original Falmouth Artists Guild.  She now exhibits at the new Falmouth Artist Guild as well as at Cape Gallery Framer, Cape Cod Art Association as an elected Artist Member, the Lyme Academy, the Lyme Art Association, and the Essex Art Association in Connecticut.

In the spring of 2014, San saw a “For Sale” sign in front of a house on Millfield Street in Woods Hole. As she had always wanted to live in the quaint village, San called the realtor. By the first snowfall, her dream had come true. Of her decision she says: “Moving Day was the day of blizzard number one and there seemed to be a blizzard every Saturday last winter. All winter long there was a crew of workmen, plumbers, carpenters, electricians and inspectors. But spring sprung and the skies lightened and I fell to painting. This show is about my love for Woods Hole (I am deeply in love with Woods Hole). There are paintings of Eel Pond in spring and summer, of Mill Pond with its array of ducks and ospreys, of the Bell Tower, of Edie Bruce’s back yard, of the Kidd, of Shuckers, of the WHOI weathervane, and more. I now live on Millfield Street. It’s the friendliest street in the world.”

Among San’s many and varied accomplishments over the years are four first place awards for best oil from Cape Cod Art Association, and two first place awards for best figurative work from Falmouth Artists Guild.  One of her paintings was used for a book jacket, and she was a featured artist in Cape Cod Life Magazine, 2007.  More recently she had a one-woman show at Cape Gallery Framer, two individual shows at Bellezza Gallery, and participated in a group show at Cataumet Art Center as well as in yearly summer group shows in Niantic, Connecticut.

This is San’s second exhibit at the Maser Gallery. Her work has also graced the walls of the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod, Falmouth Artists Guild, Penikese Island School, Cape Cod Center for Women, Falmouth Hospital and Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.
