Michael Sakasegawa: Art Opening

Michael Sakasegawa: Art Opening

Presented by Wellfleet Preservation Hall at Unknown

Wellfleet Preservation Hall is pleased to present In Detail, our first solo exhibition of photographs by Michael Sakasegawa. The exhibition features selected images from three of the artist's ongoing bodies of work, all examinations of the beauty and emotions found in the often-overlooked details of everyday life.

In his series All Good Things and Sheets: A Love Letter, Sakasegawa combines intimate portraiture and still life to create a visual impression of the emotional life of a father and husband. Quiet and hauntingly beautiful, his photographs are filled with love and longing, and an acute awareness of the passage of time and the ephemerality of the moments that make up our lives.

Contrasting with the softness of his family work, the bold abstract forms in Sakasegawa's series Caesura and Auguries evoke images of stars and storms, but are actually close studies of tea residue at the bottom of the artist's daily cup. As the last drops of liquid evaporate, dramatic swirls and patterns are revealed, each one unique and unpredictable.

Michael Sakasegawa (b. 1979, Salinas, CA.) is a self-taught photographer and writer, currently living and working in San Diego, CA. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography; the PhotoPlace Gallery, Middlebury, VT; and the Low Gallery, San Diego, CA.
