Hands-On Workshop for Antique Photographic Sun Printing Techniques

Hands-On Workshop for Antique Photographic Sun Printing Techniques

at Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary

This hands-on workshop is a unique opportunity for photographers who wish to deepen their understanding of the fine art photographic print. During the two-day immersive course here at Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, participants will delve into antique processes of Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown printing with the goal of making museum quality prints. Workshop practice and discussions will emphasize the bridging of antique photo processes with digital photography.

Program discussions will focus on the role of digital negatives in the print making process and the embodiment of nature landscapes as objects of aesthetic contemplation. Our sense of workflow is profoundly altered by the narrowing of distance between camera and computer. As a technique that embraces the idea of anachronism in a changing technoscape, it will challenge and inspire.

The workshop will feature sessions in the field as well as presentation and critique of work in progress. Objectives for the digital work flow include the production of digital negatives and positives and experimental printmaking techniques that utilize the processes of Van Dyke Brown printing and Cyanotype.

Participants should use their own digital cameras (preferably with manual settings capabilities) and are urged to have some knowledge of editing photo software.

Photographers of all levels are welcome.

Workshop is limited to 15. Instructor Bruce Childs may be contacted at childsb@apsu.edu. For other questions about registration, please contact Education Coordinator Joshua Wrigley at (508) 362-7475 Ext. 9355 or jwrigley@massaudubon.org
