Introduction to sculpting with clay

Introduction to sculpting with clay

Presented by Cotuit Center for the Arts at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Taught by instructor, Neil Grant, each of the six classes will allow students to experience a different aspect of clay sculpting from portraiture to figure sculpting to working with a slab roller. This is the ideal course for those looking to explore sculpting before taking the plunge into serious work, with demonstrations and the ability to try out different types of sculpting in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

"This class will give students an appreciation of the breadth of things they can create with clay sculpture through listening, seeing, and then trying.  It's the course I wish I'd done before plunging into sculpture," says Neil. "Each class builds on the previous one, and at the end of it students should have a broad appreciation of the world of clay sculpting and hopefully be eager to pursue an area that interests them further."

The class schedule is as follows:

Week 1 -  Working with different clays and creating basic shapes

Week 2 - Introduction to modelling the face

Week 3 - Creating a 3D portrait (live model)

Week 4 - Introduction to figure sculpting

Week 5 - Figure sculpting with a model

Week 6 - Hand building with a slab roller
