Novels and Ideas: Nineteenth Century Classics: Novels and Ideas: Tuesday, November17th, 5:00-6:30. Steve and Jeff Bornemeier conclude their wonderful course--one which everyone looks forward to each semester. Its impressive how literate and knowledgeable this father-son team has become over the years and how they help students to pick their own brains during the discussion. This week, the class will focus on "The Red Badge of Courage" (1895) by Stephen Crane. Set in a series of battles during the Civil War, Henry Fleming grows from a boy's view of the glory of battle to a mature realization of the true qualities of manhood. Henry is wounded but not as one might expect. He behaves both abominably and bravely. The novel balances themes of courage, self-preservation and the indifference of nature to human life. Class meets every other week
