Six weeks - 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13.
This class is primarily a beginning exploration of clay using the potters’ wheel. A few simple hand building basics will be introduced depending on the students interest. Learning to wedge the clay in preparation for use will be one of the first steps. Basic vocabulary will be introduced as an important part of learning about the techniques, tools and equipment for working with clay. On the wheel we will practice centering the clay, the steps to then make a cylinder, which is the starting point for many forms, and finally , trimming the bottom of the pot. Our last class will be learning to apply glaze to the pottery. Each class will have plenty of hands on time along with demonstrations and individualized instruction. The goal of this class to provide a foundation from which take off in this multifaceted craft. Books, hand outs, and examples of pottery will be available to reinforce lessons. All tools, materials, and firings are provided. Beginners and refreshers are welcome. This class meets in the pottery studio in the lower level of the Education Wing.
